Words from Women Sufferers

“It was like living in a black fog”.

“I cried all the time, I had no control over my feelings”.

“I thought I was going to die or that my baby would”.

“I was scared by the feelings that I was experiencing”.

“I was so lonely and frightened that I could not tell anyone”.

Everyone recovers from postnatal depression eventually but that does not mean the memory of it goes. Some women will come to terms with the experience, others will find it difficult or may even be ashamed or embarrassed. Some women say that having survived postnatal depression they can survive anything and go on to help other women. What is certain is that the effects of postnatal depression will change the woman’s outlook on life and what was important in the past no longer has the same significance.

If you know someone who is suffering with postnatal depression and needs help, then contact a health professional who can refer her to the appropriate carer.
